The Institute of Biology was awarded the title of ‘MTA Centre of Excellence’

 Based on the proposal of the Academy’s Research Institute Evaluation Council, the Institute of Biology (Faculty of Science and Informatics, University of Szeged) was awarded the title ‘MTA Centre of Excellence’. The Institute of Biology is entitled to use the qualification for the coming five years. The award certificate was received by Dr. Attila Gácser, the Head of the Institute of Biology, from Dr. Tamás Freund, the President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and Dr. László Hunyadi, the Chairman of the Research Institute Evaluation Council, in the Ceremonial Hall of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Scholarship for Young Talents of the Nation

 An application titled „Interaction of NMDA receptor signaling and cerebral edema formation after ischemic stroke” submitted by our colleague Dr. Rita Frank to the 2022 Scholarship for Young Talents of the Nation by the Human Resource Support Management Office has been awarded. With the financial support, Rita will participate in the ’5th International Conference on Spreading Depolarizations (iCSD)’ conference which will be held in Salt Lake City, U.S.A. Congratulations for the achievement!

TDK presentation award

 Gábor Barczánfalvi, a second year MSc biology student working on a student science project at our Department has won second prize for his presentation at the 36rd Student Science Study Group Conference, Faculty of Science and Informatics Local Conference, 2022 Spring, Section: Biology II – Neurophysiology. The project supervisor has been Prof. Dr. Károly Gulya. Congratulations for the achievement!

Stephen W. Kuffler Publication Scholarship

 

 A publication titled „Malignant astrocyte swelling and impaired glutamate clearance drive the expansion of injurious spreading depolarization foci” submitted by our colleague Dr. Rita Frank to the 2022 call for the Stephen W. Kuffler Publication Prize has been awarded. The awards ceremony will take place in the main building of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences this fall. Congratulations for the achievement!

 Our Scientific Study Group Students volunteered at the care center for Ukrainian refugees on the Hungarian-Ukrainian border. Sarah Samardzic and Sarah Danica Berger, 5th year medical students, as University of Szeged medical team representatives, took care of the Ukrainian refugees from 11 to 15 March 2022. All our appreciation for their self-sacrificing work.
